Guo Shiguangzhi's first novel, Travel, Desire, and Identity, is jointly recommended by Niu You Xiaosheng, Feng Chuihua, and Lin Weidi!
"This manuscript, which is on par with Milan Kundera and Proust, was once huge, but it seems so small when I read it back many years later." - Guo Shiguangzhi If I were to recommend a must-read novel for young writers, Tian Tianqing's "Summer Chronicles of a Youngster on an Isolated Island" has always been my first choice. Many years later, we finally waited for another masterpiece that can rival it - "Kaohsiung 202". - Lin Weidi The story begins in the B&B Kaohsiung 202, and the scenes span Taiwan, Japan and Malaysia. There is no obvious story axis or plot arrangement. In this series of narratives lacking plots, the author replaces "plot" with "atmosphere", and the story is dissolved. The construction of this "atmosphere" is difficult. It is a skill of poetry, transitioned to prose, and finally used in novels. - Feng Chuihua
Guo Shiguangzhi captures a common unease among young Chinese Malaysians, which blurs the meaning of travel. Is travel an active act, an act of "expulsion," or a "self-exile," rendering one's hometown a "permanent foreign land"? This might be one way to approach this novel.
Guo Shiguangzhi
Born in Klang, Selangor in 1988, after graduating from a national secondary school, he went to Taiwan to study Chinese Literature at National Taiwan University. After graduating, he worked at his father's small factory in Shanghai before returning to Malaysia to work as a reporter for Sin Chew Daily. He currently works for The Edge Financial Newspaper. Looking back at the dimming lights, the years when I used to be a self-proclaimed artistic youth have passed.
