"The Malay Peninsula (West Malaysia) and Singapore, separated by a narrow strip of water, have always been a common entity in terms of geography, history and even Chinese literature. From 1919 to 1965, Malayan Chinese literature has always included Malay (West) Asian Chinese literature and Singaporean Chinese literature. After Singapore's independence in 1965, the concept of "New Chinese Literature" was born." (Singaporean scholar Zhang Senlin) After the separation of Singapore and Malaysia, the development of Chinese literature in the two countries has since been "independent" and there has been little communication.
This issue of "Monsoon Belt" crosses the Causeway to the southernmost tip of Peninsular Malaysia, focusing on "New Chinese Literature." Besides discussing the development of literature in both Singapore and Malaysia since their separation, it also explores the place of New Chinese literature within the Chinese language literature. Malaysian Chinese poet Lu Yutao reviews the poetry collection of young Singaporean poet Gu Xingzi, offering a rare cross-national and intergenerational encounter between the Chinese literary communities of Singapore and Malaysia.
