Reading essays over the past few years has reaffirmed my belief that the most moving prose is that which reveals the author's true character. As the genre most recognizable to me, essays allow the author to delve directly into their inner selves, even inadvertently venturing into forgotten corners. And in observing the deepest recesses of the soul, courage and sincerity may be more important than skill. This is especially true when faced with yesterdays that are gone forever, unrenewable, and wounds that cannot be shared with outsiders and that time can never heal. —Lin Chunmei

As the most significant publication in Malaysian Chinese literature in 2019, "Sheep Climbing Trees: Selected Contemporary Malaysian Chinese Prose (2013-2016)" follows the previous, highly representative anthology, "Drifting with the Island: Selected Contemporary Malaysian Chinese Prose (2000-2012)." This collection features 53 essays by 43 Malaysian Chinese writers from 2013-2016 that "most clearly reveal the writers' true colors." Edited by scholars Lin Chunmei and Chen Xianglin, with veteran editors Zhang Yongxiu and Cai Meiyan on the editorial board, these two perspectives interweave to present a vibrant and diverse picture of Malaysian Chinese writers.
