I am a reptile living in the darkness of the bottom of the sea. I light a lonely lamp for myself in the deep sea. I crawl with my fins to where the glimmer of light reaches. I wait with unimaginable patience for the fish that turn to the light, then devour it fiercely. The seawater without light is as hard as gravel. The driest place in the reptile's body is when it is alive.
——<I am a reptile>
I think ice cream would be too high in fat and oil, too sweet, too cold. Complete dependence is the ultimate correct diet. For colds, sore throats, enterovirus...
Any time a doctor recommends it, you should have a bowl of it. And when you want to heal the world──
I thought: Eat ice cream, it will be fine.
——〈I think I'll be fine if I eat ice cream〉
Poet Fu Suchun, from the perspectives of a youngest daughter, wife, mother, and teacher, gathers moments from days of insomnia and nighttime wanderings. Her tender and delicate verses capture the fleeting moments of youth, love, and life, recounting the fleeting moments lost to the passage of time. As she builds her own private poetic castle, line by line, she also embodies the healing energy of life and hope.
Fu Suchun
A native of Taoyuan, he graduated with a Ph.D. in Chinese Literature from National Chung Hsing University and is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Chinese Literature at Providence University.
Between motherhood and teaching, I deeply perceive poetry as a comfortable, secret dialogue with myself and my readers. For someone whose life depends on words, beyond the early versions of youth, the belated adoption of the pen in middle age is merely a way to salvage a glimmer of light amidst the hustle and bustle of life and reading and writing. Or perhaps it's simply through writing poetry, an escape, a momentary glimmer of self-compression.
