Huang Jinshu:
Although novels are minor, they can also respond to history.
The Japanese colonial era is over, but the Malayan Communist Party's legacy lives on in the present. Not to mention the over a thousand retired Malayan Communist Party members who still exist, and the unknown number of "returnees" who were "repatriated to China" by the British colonial government. The hundreds of new villages scattered across Malaysia alone are a contemporary continuation of past history.
Zhang Jinzhong:
Going to Southeast Asia, Japanese invasion, British colonial rule, state of emergency, independence, the Malayan Communist Party and the Sarawak Communist Party, the May 13 Incident, the Reformasi... History has been archived and ended in the name of various events, but our interpretation of history and memory, and our imagination of our country and nation have not ended, nor can they end.
Different generations have different memories, imaginations, perspectives and interpretations, so that the narrative of family and country can continue from generation to generation. No matter how or where the novel is written, it can never avoid this historical jungle swamp.
