Marginal Pen: Things That Can Be Written or Cannot Be Written
"Homeland, Food, and Memory: Field Notes Across Nanyang" compiles An Huanran's field notes and cultural commentary, published over the years in his "Marginal Commentary" column in the Sin Chew Daily supplement. Through thematic reorganization and content reorganization, these previously scattered columns are connected into a more cohesive narrative. The book not only reflects the author's long-term observations and reflections on education, language, and local culture in Malaysian Chinese society, but also explores the power dynamics between the "periphery" and the "center."
In this sharing session, An Huanran will share his field experiences in the book, his own historical enlightenment and writing background, and have a conversation with the director of the supplement, Huang Junlin, to review how the supplement accommodated "marginal" texts and views in the past, and reflect on whether there is still room for "marginal" texts to be published in the contemporary media environment.
