The new preface offers insightful commentary on the current political drama in Malaysia. This book offers the first compelling account of the 1969 "May 13 Clan Riots." The author waited until the 30-year statute of limitations on the archives in London had expired before he was able to access declassified documents from the National Archives in London. These documents provide covert observations and memoranda made by intelligence officers in British and other foreign embassies. Their work is based on intelligence gathered and contacts with local officials and politicians, including dispatches and messages sent by correspondents.

At the time, these dispatches or messages were censored. Kua Kah Sun, a social scientist, offers a fresh and unique political analysis of the "May 13 Incident," which triggered the most serious political and social crisis in Malaysia's history. The author argues that the riots were not, as the official version portrays them, a sudden and spontaneous outbreak of violence between Malays and Chinese. Rather, they were a carefully orchestrated coup by the emerging bureaucratic bourgeoisie within UMNO against the aristocratic class led by Tunku Abdul Rahman.

He delves into the internal contradictions arising from the Alliance's racial agenda after independence, while also tracing the rise of the new Malay bourgeoisie that has governed Malaysia since 1969. A story of imagination, ruins, desire, and the cruelty of youth in the post-epidemic era.

When the plague strikes and the city becomes deserted, a father and his daughter Lilika walk into the ruins of the once prosperous city. They dig into the prehistoric past from their own memories and growth experiences, and embark on a journey of chasing time and memory.

Lilika, an artificially created girl, is filled with curiosity and confusion about the world before her. In different rooms, like a father teaching his daughter to read, she identifies the fragments of civilization left behind by humanity—from the Renaissance work "The Birth of Venus," the 1990s video game "SimCity 2000," the Japanese anime "Neon Genesis Evangelion," to cameras, zoos, and silicone sex dolls... These man-made objects, sealed in time, each gained meaning as she points them out.

Artificial Girl, Gong Wanhui's first novel, approximately 150,000 words, received a 2017 Taiwan National Arts Council Malaysian Chinese Novel Creation and Publication Grant. The novel's twelve chapters are organized into "rooms," like the scales of a clock; opening a door opens one into a compartment of time.

Through the stories of a couple who repeatedly try and fail to conceive, a young girl named Keiko experiencing growing pains, and a young boy named Naoki, uneasy about his gender, the novel explores the eternal questions of creation and destruction, reality and fiction. If life can be artificially created, can we also freely fill the blank with memories and imagination? Is cloning life like cloning time, allowing us to relive the past?

Artificial Girl continues Gong Wanhui's signature style of depicting brutal youth stories, imbued with unbridled imagination and poetic, surreal imagery. Written during the pandemic, the author also captures the ravages of the plague over the past two years, delicately describing the apocalyptic scenes of deserted streets and shopping malls, and the loneliness and self-harm of people cocooned in their rooms.

Writer Shi Huimin's article introduction:

"Gong Wanhui breaks the time in the rational world and resists the cruel objective reality.
The pain is too heavy, only poetry and magic can redeem it."

About the Author:
Gong Wanhui was born in Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia. This offers a brief escape from those filthy gazes, and every day is filled with sweetness. Lijuan and Liangqing develop feelings for each other. Despite the companionship of others, she could never fill the void in her heart, nor could she overcome the walls that trapped her. She yearned for her homeland and its people, longing for it. One day, years later, she seized the opportunity to return home and calmly set in motion her plan to make Old Huang experience the same pain and suffering she had endured. While this story seemed to be the end, it was actually the beginning of another story of revenge...

The story peels back the threads of hatred, layer by layer, revealing the choices between good and evil within. Take it off the table, and then climb back up again when you're not looking. The cat insists on watching me paint. Perhaps some of the paintings in this collection have been tampered with by the cat.

The curiosity of a cat. Magritte once painted a gray cat sitting in a floating top hat, as if piloting a spaceship. The cover of this book, with the man in a suit and a top hat, is a tribute to this surrealist painter. I like Magritte, just as I like the objects in his paintings that defy gravity and float. I have always felt that these surrealist paintings are actually very close to literature, like the language of poetry, or the various imagery of poetry. Like good literary works, good paintings should also have something that cannot be expressed in words, but can still involve you and make you feel something.

Quietly waiting to be stared at and discovered.

It's said that someone has finally realized that the images and texts originally uploaded to the internet are actually disappearing silently. Perhaps because a website or forum has long since been shut down without a care in the world, or because of various censorships, strange and unknown reasons, like a spark that has been extinguished, it can no longer be retrieved.

We are all sojourners, and the promised land we imagined back then has never truly materialized. Perhaps we have all mistakenly believed that the memories stored online or on social media will last forever. But in reality, those digital images and words, at moments unknown to us, in ways and at speeds we never noticed, gradually fade and disappear.

Perhaps the things that combat disappearance and nothingness are tactile objects—things you can touch, touch, and hold in your palms; or perhaps the feelings and memories that linger in your heart. For example, petting a cat or looking at old paintings in an exhibition hall. If you get close enough, you can see colors washed away by time, cracks in the paint, and the layers of brushstrokes that can't be reproduced on a screen—you can imagine the painting process of a painter a century ago.

Sometimes I wonder if a painting, sculpture, or book, carefully preserved by humans, could possibly survive longer than if it were posted online. And every hand-drawn painting is a unique copy. Even I, for one, could never fully recreate a single work I've ever created. Could artificial intelligence now imitate Magritte's style? I think it's possible, but there are certainly areas beyond the reach of Prompt, areas even AI would struggle to understand, like poetry, and all sorts of fantastical ideas that have no parallel in any database—the meaning of creation, that magic that humans have yet to truly replace.

Perhaps for this reason, I imagined these paintings and texts becoming a book that can be held in the hands, turned over, and hugged; it can be discarded and cherished.

I'm a painter and a writer. In this book, the paintings have accompanied texts created by different people, and the texts have accompanied fragmented moments. Its almost harmonious voice echoes endlessly like a cold spring, rising and falling here and there, repeatedly challenging the reader's patience. Xin Yuan dedicates her lyricism to the everyday, the dim light, and the subtle objects, whether it's her own city, the fields, the ruins, an island covered in mercury, or even the vast, uninhabited land. She brazenly summons all things beyond her own locale, arrogantly attempting to locate the visible and invisible in the universe within every corner of the poetic nouns, ultimately forming a paradoxical chorus of lyricism—the aesthetic of "indifference/delusion," where lyricism is everywhere. The Song Dynasty scholar Ouyang Xiu wrote a single, thirteen-character preface to his collection of poetry, "Six One Poetry Talks," which reads, "The hermit has retired to Ruyin and compiled these works for casual conversation." But there are no longest prefaces, only longer ones! In 1990, Yang Chuan published his first book, the short story collection "Red Dust Calls." His second, "Unfinished Journey," was a collection of poetry in 1999. In 2001, he published another collection of poetry, "Searching for Trees." I wrote the prefaces for all of these books.

In October 2023, he invited me to write the preface for his fourth book, his third collection of poetry. While this seemingly ordinary arrangement of years reveals the fleeting passage of time, a writer's thirty-three-year journey through life has left behind traces of his past, documenting his experiences, building his secret garden, and, most importantly, deeply embedded within it, his emotional core!

From 1982, when I first met him, until now, in 2024, Yang Chuan has transformed himself from a young man to a doctoral scholar through a series of transformations over the past 42 years. Besides the twelve short stories in his first volume, he has written over 200 poems over the course of his life, and there are likely more that haven't been collected yet. Compared to veteran Taiwanese poet Bai Hao, who wrote over 400 poems at the age of 22, this is certainly a small number. However, compared to Zhang Ruoxu of the Tang Dynasty, who wrote only two poems at the age of 82, yet his works have become legendary, Yang Chuan's output is still quite high.

One day in the 1980s, Yang Chuan insisted that he would invite me to write a preface for every book he published. This promise was a bit like the lines from Li Bai's "Xia Ke Xing": "Three cups of wine, a promise uttered; the Five Mountains seem light!" Indeed, he resembled the knights in the poetry collection "Unfinished Journey," those fleeting yet steadfast knights amidst the mists of rivers and lakes, the starlight and the water, the lingering fragrance of the past. Even after traversing mountains and exhausting youth, after seeing the world, he still remembered, looking back, the small yet weighty promise he once made to a woman. Was this promise he made to me, or was it the other way around, that I insisted on writing another preface for him?

According to numerous written sources and videos, the most surging period of modern Taiwanese poetry occurred between 1956 and 1965. I was born late in life, in 1971, when I was in high school. I encountered names like Zheng Chouyu, Zhou Mengdie, Yu Guangzhong, Ye Shan (who changed her name to Yang Mu in 1972), Ji Xian, Xian, Bai Hao, and Xiang Yang. My excitement was no less than that of reading the works of Li Ao, Jiang Yun, Zhang Xiaofeng, and Wang Shangyi. From the 1980s to the present, poetry has become Yang Chuan's life's sustenance, even his very being. Taiwanese literary critic Yang Zhao once said that poetry is a requiem. At least, in my opinion, poetry is the music that brings peace to Yang Chuan's soul.

Poetics has its own lineage and genes. As someone who writes Chinese poetry, I'm certainly aware of its continuity. However, tracing poetry's genealogical database and investigating its genetic genealogy isn't like uncovering the horror of crime in a criminal investigation. Instead, by analyzing the clues in the family database of poetic genes, I seem to have grasped some of the lineage. Reading the last few lines of Yang Chuan's 1985 poem "Between the Plainness": Sometimes nightmares are low-flowing blood / Why are I tired / No / I still hold a sun lamp / Waiting for the bus in the howling night rain," I seem to smell the spiritual flavor of Yang Mu's classic line in "Screen": "I don't know what my mood will be like when the dew is heavy after sunset!"

Yang Chuan had already undergone a transformation since 1982. He had admired the Zen spirit of Zheng Chouyu and been captivated by the hazy works of Bei Dao. He had shed the nostalgic feelings of his youth, and after settling his most cherished admiration, he embarked on his second collection of poetry, "Searching for Trees." This was from 1987 to 2000. His poetry gradually became more three-dimensional, with lyricism somewhat losing ground to symbolism. His past meticulous brushwork now reads as sketchy, yet more poignant. The opening lines of "Potted Human": Sadly contemplating the height / Pacing back and forth / In the dry interior / Spring passes and autumn arrives.

The shift in vocabulary, from euphemistic to pointed, from obscurity to clarity, from self-participation to observation, from richness to coolness—this is my first impression upon reading Yang Chuan's third poetry collection. But are these changes merely superficial? Even a rose with a new name still smells the same; a hydrangea that changes from blue to purple is still a hydrangea, isn't it? For example, in Malaysia, different races have different ways of describing a particular thing. The Chinese term for a woman's butterfly outfit is Baju Kelawar in Malay. Which creature, butterfly or bat, is more aptly used to describe women's clothing? Aesthetically, it's a subjective decision. And the Malay term "Musim Bunga" is the Chinese word for spring. Is there a difference in imagery between flower season and spring? In fact, his poetic style has truly evolved! Classic works should be passed down through the ages, not just languishing in libraries. Following the critically acclaimed reprints of Lu Baiye's Malay Notes (Newly Annotated Edition) and Lion City Notes (Newly Annotated Edition), which were selected as books of the year by Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao and achieved the highest sales of Malaysian literature and history books in 2019, the Chou Sing Chu Foundation, the copyright holder of World Books' publications, is proud to present Penang Notes (Newly Annotated Edition). As the third volume in the "Sing Chu Classics" series, this extensive and rich collection of works is intended to be easily accessible to all Penang lovers, whether those yet to fall in love with the city, students, or even foreign tourists. With this volume in hand, they can savor every detail of Penang's past, and ultimately love and cherish Penang even more, so that it can live up to its UNESCO World Heritage designation. Penang is full of buildings with stories, and there is a strong cultural demand behind them. It is also one of the states with the highest proportion of Chinese population in Malaysia. Cultural and educational institutions and clan associations are everywhere. The complete supply of cultural and historical knowledge and sentiments can better shape the future development of Penang. As the saying goes, "hard power makes a city strong, and soft power makes a city great."

The geographical term "Penang" first appears in Zheng He's Navigation Map, originally included in the Ming Dynasty book "Wu Bei Zhi" (1628) compiled by Mao Yuanyi. There are also records indicating that Penang had navigable routes to China as early as the 15th century. Further back in time, human remains dating back 5,700 years were unearthed at the Guar Kepah shell midden site in northern Seberang Perai, Penang in 2017, dating back to the Neolithic Age.

Penang was modernized in 1786 under the leadership of British Captain Francis Light (1740-1794), over 200 years ago. With economic development and the influx of immigrants, schools, religious sites, newspapers, and clan associations flourished, disseminating knowledge and ideas, fostering the exchange of scholars and the flow of cultural influence. Penang's rich and diverse cultural history has made it a representative example of topographical research, attracting countless scholars over the years to explore the intricate relationships between the people and culture of Southeast Asia and Chinese and Western colonizers. Similarly, Beijing and Shanghai in China have established their own academic fields of "Beijing Studies" and "Shanghai Studies," while Japan's "Tokyo Studies" and "Kyoto Studies" have become models for sociologists. When a city's distinctive characteristics become self-contained, they can become a discipline, much like the "Redology" (study of "Dream of the Red Chamber") and "Zhang Studies" (study of Eileen Chang) in the literary world. The fruitful and growing body of research on Penang has contributed significantly to the well-established field of Penang Studies. Kuang Guoxiang's Penang Notes and Penang Notes: Sequel are undoubtedly two of the most important works in the construction of Penang Studies.

Originally from Yongxing, Dapu, Guangdong, China, Kuang Guoxiang was the great-nephew-in-law of Zhang Bishi, the first vice-consul in Penang during the Qing Dynasty. At the age of 26 (1930), he moved to Penang and took over the management of Shizhong School for decades. While in Penang, he delved deeply into literature and history. His book, "Penang Notes," was published by World Book Company in Singapore in 1958, and "Penang Notes: A Sequel" was published in 1973. Half a century later, the Chou Sing Chu Foundation has combined the two books into a single volume, "Penang Notes (Newly Annotated Edition)." In addition to the 67 original essays and four prefaces, the Foundation's editorial team has added hundreds of thousands of words of annotations and images to enhance the understanding of contemporary readers, along with a chronology of the authors and a consulting preface by Professors Wang Runhua and Du Zhongquan. The five volumes cover historical anecdotes, historical landscapes, local chronicles of scenic spots, temples and ancestral halls, and anecdotes about people, systematically presenting Penang as portrayed by the author.

The Federation of Malaya gained independence on August 31, 1957. The author wrote these essays in the 1940s and 1950s, a period of turmoil when diverse ethnic groups desperately needed to understand each other and unite to build a nation. Having lived in Penang for a long time, the author developed a deep affection for the land and a deep sense of pride in his heart. Drawing on his extensive local experience and knowledge, he diligently wrote over many years, drawing on extensive sources and expressing his passion and passion, resulting in "Penang Notes" and "Penang Notes: Sequel," two essential classics of Penang local history for enthusiasts of Southeast Asian literature and history.

As time passes, Penang society undergoes rapid transformation. The eleven stories in this book are mostly pessimistic and melancholic, making them disheartening to read. But in Huang Jinshu's hands, this kind of despair, turned from the depths of his heart, becomes more like a plaything. You have to immerse yourself in it to emerge. He must have a deep accumulation and investment to summon the Malayan Communist Party deep in the rubber plantations, the betel nut beauties amid the Mambo waves of Taiwan, and those hilarious "poet writers."

In this context, "novels" are more like Huang Jinshu's cherished playthings, a means of "losing one's ambition," a form of self-expression that is, in fact, another form of expression, a deeper one. He responded to the various tragic and bizarre conditions in Malaysia and Taiwan—hope and despair, emotion and dejection—in "Slow Boat of the Republic of China." One is where he was born and raised, the other where he studied and settled. Someone, at some unknown time, simply because he happened to be there, forced something upon him. He shook his head in protest, but never let go.

Huang Jinshu:
"The situation in Taiwan is dismal, and the history of the Republic of China has clearly entered a period of retreat. Therefore, the book's initial title was 'The Slow Boat Leaving the Republic of China'; but the environment in Malaysia also seems unfriendly, so the title was briefly considered 'The Slow Boat Sailing to the Republic of China'. However, the Republic of China ship is largely sunk in the past, with perhaps only the raised stern still barely dry. With its vector removed, the old, wrecked ship is left alone, drifting in the equatorial doldrums."

About the Author:
Huang Jinshu, born in Malaysia in 1967, is currently a university professor and the author of several novels and essays.

Born in Kluang, Johor, Malaysia in 1967, his ancestral home is Nan'an, Fujian.
